The Story Behind the Beans: Bette Buna
Bette Buna means "the house of coffee" in Amharic. The farm is located in Megadu, a remote region in Guji, Ethiopia. This farm was founded by Dawit and Hester to carry on the legacy of Syoum and Emame, Dawit’s grandparents. With a deep commitment to the community and nature, they practice sustainable farming methods and produce exclusive single origin coffees of the highest quality.
The coffee cherries are hand-picked, sorted, and dried on raised beds for 15-21 days. This careful processing preserves the intense fruit flavors and ensures a unique taste experience.
A Day at the Bette Buna Farm
At Bette Buna Farm, coffee is grown in semi- and wild coffee forests, surrounded by natural shade. During harvest, motivated women hand-pick the ripe cherries. After harvesting, the cherries are carefully processed to ensure the perfect flavor. Additionally, delicious organic honey is produced in the region, carrying the taste of coffee blossoms.
The farm not only grows coffee but also takes care of the community. The staff receives fair wages as well as accommodation, food, and transportation. During peak season, their families are also welcome, and children receive education on-site.
Processing Details:
The cherries for this coffee were hand-picked by 850 workers in November and December. After fermentation, the cherries were dried over 3.5 weeks under semi-sunny conditions, then stored in GrainPro bags. The final processing took place at a dry mill near Addis Ababa, where the beans were sorted by size and quality and prepared for shipment.
